An unconstrained integral approximation of large sliding frictional contact between deformable solids

چکیده
This paper presents a new integral approximation of frictional contact problems under finite deformations and large sliding. Similar to other augmented Lagrangian based formulations, the proposed method expresses impenetrability, friction and the relevant complementarity conditions as a non-smooth equation, consistently linearized and incorporated in a generalized Newton solution process. However, instead of enforcing the non-smooth complementarity equation in the already discretized system, a corresponding weak formulation in the continuous setting is considered and discretized through a standard Galerkin procedure. Such an integral handling of the contact and friction complementarity conditions, applied previously only to frictional contact problems under small deformations, is extended in the present paper to contact with Coulomb friction between solids undergoing large deformations. In total, the proposed method is relatively simple to implement, while its robustness is illustrated through numerical examples in two and three dimensions.

Thermoelastic Displacements and Stresses Due to a Heat Source Moving Over the Surface of a Half Plane
If two thermally conducting bodies are in sliding contact, the frictional heat generated at the interfaces causes thermoelastic distortion which profoundly influences the extent of the contact area and the distribution of contact stress [1]. This phenomenon now known as thermoelastic instability has been observed experimentally in a wide range of practical sliding systems [2, 3]. Several theore...

University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, England; Now, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109 The work vf Jaeger [l] and Barber [2] indicates that the division of frictional heat between sliding solids should be sensitive to the interfacial boundary conditions. Thus it should provide a guide to the nature of asperity interactions and a more accurate statement of the...
متن کاملRate and State Dependent Friction and the Stability of Sliding Between Elastically Deformable Solids
We study the stability of steady sliding between elastically deformable continua using rate and state dependent friction laws. That is done for both elastically identical and elastically dissimilar solids. The focus is on linearized response to perturbations of steady state sliding, and on studying how the positive direct effect (instantaneous increase or decrease of shear strength in response ...
متن کاملGeneral theory of frictional heating with application to rubber friction.
The energy dissipation in the contact regions between solids in sliding contact can result in high local temperatures which may strongly effect friction and wear. This is the case for rubber sliding on road surfaces at speeds above 1 mm s(-1). We derive equations which describe the frictional heating for solids with arbitrary thermal properties. The theory is applied to rubber friction on road ...
متن کاملDINAME 2013 - Simulation of Dynamic Instabilities Induced by Sliding Contacts
When dealing with complex mechanical systems that include sliding contact, it is necessary to account for the coupling between the dynamic behavior of the system and the local behavior at the contact. A particular consequence of interaction between system dynamics and contact behavior is the occurring of vibrational instabilities of the mechanical system, induced by the frictional contact. The ...
